Edna Whitaker
Annual Scholarship (for non-traditional students)
Palm Beach State College
$1,000 Award
About:
The annual scholarship is named in honor of the late Mrs. Edna Whitaker. Edna Whitaker worked all her life to support her family beginning with her first job while she was in middle school. Higher education was a luxury Mrs. Whitaker couldn’t afford to pursue yet she still understood the value of a great education. Mrs. Whitaker's limited education resulted in her becoming a vocal advocate for education and she instilled hard work into her five children. Mrs. Whitaker was a role model to all her children and her youngest daughter, Yvette M. Miley. In an interview, Ms. Miley said a quote from author Alice Walker, best described Mrs. Whitaker: “My mom knew what I needed to know without knowing a page of it herself.”
The Edna Whitaker Scholarship supports the educational endeavors of all students, with an emphasis on non-traditional students. This scholarship is focused on students returning to school after a considerable lapse, full-time employees, parents, high school graduates, GED holders, and those seeking trade certifications.
